Tau chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron had the privilege of entertaining the
district counselor, Miss Juliette Myren, on Oct. 18 and 19. Through a series of
meetings with the whole group and the officers, Miss Myren was able to meet all
the members of Tau chapter.
The highlights of the weekend was initiation and the banquets following. Those
girls initiated into Phi U are Carol Bibby, Opal Burton, Rita Casey, Peggy
Deering, Mary Ann Parkel, Joan Scheevel, Pat Soldner, Alice Weltzin and Eleanor
Weltzin.
The banquet following took as its' them, "Phi U Salutes the United Nations."
Four dimensional globes, flags from the different countries and red carnations
formed the centerpieces of the tables. A delicious dinner was served by the
ladies f the Peace Lutheran Church.
The program included a group of songs from various countries sung by a quartet
composed of Joan Wonoski, Betty Havlik, Barbara Hartig and Ann Kofoed. A very
clever book review and reading was given by Beverly Duerkop, on the United
Nations as seen through the eyes of a child. Alice Yamamoto did a hula; and Miss
Latifah, one of the Indonesian women on campus, gave a very interesting talk on
home economics education in central Java, and its marriage customs. The program
closed with "America the Beautiful." A very successful weekend had been enjoyed
by all.
Mary Ann Parkel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Parkel Jr. of R. 1,
Willard (Clark Co., Wis.), and a graduate of the Greenwood High School class of
