The Wisconsin Public Service Commission at Madison has granted a petition of the
Soo Line Railroad to withdraw agency service at the unincorporated village of
Milan in the town of Johnson.
The community, at one time known a Milano, was one of the first in western
Marathon County to have a railroad stop. It was on the Abbotsford-Eastern
Railroad Company, running from Abbotsford to Athens, during the time Fred
Rietbrock, a Milwaukee attorney, was inducing settlers to come to the area and
was beginning sawmill operations.
During the early days of the community, a sawmill and other industries were in
operation there. Shipments of major industries in the community at the present
are sent largely by truck.
