Smagacz, Lori (Scholarship -1974)
Lori Smagacz, a student at Neillsville High School, who won a scholarship from
the Business and Professional Women’s Club, attended a special high school
workshop at the Trees for Tomorrow Environmental Center, Eagle River, on May
5-8.
Forty-three girls from schools throughout the state took part in the three-day
workshop on scholarships furnished by BPW clubs in their area.
M. N. Taylor, executive director, welcomed the girls and gave a colored slide
lecture on the Winds of Change, Trees for Tomorrow’s history and projections for
the future.
Touring in the new Trees for Tomorrow rolling classroom, towards which Wisconsin
BPW clubs raised $8,000 in a recent campaign, the girls carried out the theme of
the 1974 workshops, “Time to Discover.” They studied environmental and
sociological products for human needs on tours to the Ottawa national forest at
Watersmeet, Michigan, the Star Lake Plantation, and the Wisconsin Press
Association Forest.
They learned about energy in the environment and studied ecology in the center’s
demonstration forest with students teaching students.
