Daina Shilts, 24, of Neillsville paired with Olympian Hannah Teter to win a
bronze medal last week in the Special Olympics Unified Snowboarding dual slalom
event at the X-Games in Aspen, CO.
A year ago the dynamic duo won a silver medal in the event, which requires each
member of the unified teams to take two runs down the slalom course, with the
best scores from each run combined. Winning a bronze medal means Shilts will
automatically be invited back for the 2017 X-Games.
“We were the only females on the awards podium,” Shilts noted.
Shilts and her coach, Sue Jodarski, were expected to arrive back in Neillsville
Tuesday evening, weather permitting.
Desiree Fravert congratulated Shilts on her accomplishment, recognizing many
others for their roles in her success.
“The next time yo0u see Daina and Sue in the halls at school or in the
community, make sure you congratulate them both,” Fravert said. “Much of what
Daina has learned and accomplished could not have been possible without the
support of Dean Glaze, Sue Jodarski and supportive family and friends. The
entire school staff needs to be thanked for supporting Daina in her daily life.
Without encouragement in our daily lived, we feel downtrodden and less inclined
to do great things with our life.”
