Marshall, George D. (26 December 1925 - 25 December 2015) With Flag
George D. Marshall, 89, passed away Dec. 25, 2015, at the Tomah VA Medical
Center. He was born Dec. 26, 1925, in Monroe County, Michigan, to Ordie and Lena
(Bauer) Marshall. At an early age, they moved to Neillsville.
At the age of 17, George joined the Merchant Marines, and as soon as he reached
age 18, he joined the Army. He served during World War II and turned 19 while
fighting in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany. His company helped liberate a
concentration camp in Germany, and after the end of WWII, he was in charge of
the guards at one of the war crime trials. George was stationed at several Army
camps and later was stationed in Okinawa with the 29th Infantry Regiment. When
war was declared in Korea, he was sent to Korea. After two tours in Korea,
George was honorably discharged as a Warrant Officer 2. He served his country
for almost 10 years.
Shortly after his military discharge, George started hauling General Motors
vehicles for WR Arthur Company out of Janesville, (later named Janesville Auto
Transport). He was employed there for 30 years. In 2011, George was admitted to
the Tomah VA Medical Center as an Alzheimer’s patient. George was a 100-percent
disabled veteran.
George is survived by his wife, Wilva; his daughter, Kathi (Dwight) Hibicki;
step-daughters: Roseanne (Robert) Wagner, Janice Stubrud, Jo (John) Chrest,
Carla (Rick) Nemitz; and step-son Ron Rogness; and many grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law Betty and
Vi Marshall, along with nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at 11 a. m. at the
United Methodist Church, Hixton. Rev. Meg Erickson will be officiating. Burial,
with military honors, will follow in Sechlerville Cemetery. Family and friends
are invited for visitation Saturday, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service
at the church.
Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church of Hixton or the Alma
Center VFW.
Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home of Hixton is assisting the family with
arrangements.
George’s family would like to thank the Tomah VA staff that so lovingly cared
for him. You are “angels” and have no idea how thankful we are for all you did.
