Lake at a later date.
Veronica was the only daughter of George and Veronica Waegerle; she had one
brother George Jr. and a half-brother John.
She grew up in Lomira, Wisconsin where she graduated as valedictorian from
Lomira High School and went on to beauty school. Upon completion of beautician
school, she worked in Fond du Lac. When her father, who was a professional
brewmeister moved to Medford, Wisconsin, she went with her parents and it was
there that she met a young baseball player named Francis Schaack.
They were married on August 26, 1935 in Holy Rosary Church in Medford. The Great
Depression was still ravaging the country and their simple wedding reception was
held in her parents’ home, where the furniture was moved and pushed back against
the walls to accommodate the guests. In 1938, the young couple and their first
child moved to Rib Lake, Wisconsin where a new branch of the State Bank of
Medford had opened and a new job as assistant cashier awaited her husband,
Francis.
Veronica and Francis lived in Rib Lake for many years where they raised their 6
children. Veronica was a full-time housewife and mother. She was also a frequent
volunteer at the school, the public library and the Golden Age Nursing Home. She
was active in Christian Mothers at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and
active in Rib Lake’s Commercial Club. Veronica was affectionately known as Roni
to her many friends, whom she loved to have over to visit; and her home was
frequently overflowing with out-of-town relatives. She was part of that bygone
era where no guest ever left without a good home-cooked meal first. Somehow she
managed to always have enough time to care for her big family and still made
anyone else who came to her door feel welcomed. In 1974, Francis passed away;
and in 1987 Veronica moved to the Wausau area to be closer to her children and
their families.
She became a volunteer at Evergreen Elementary School in Kronenwetter and the
Aspirus Hospital Gift Shop. She also became active in a seniors bowling league.
It was there that she met Richard Carle and shortly after they married on April
22, 1989 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Weston, Wisconsin. She and her husband
Richard spent 22 happy years together - bowling, traveling, playing cribbage and
visiting with their families. Her husband Richard passed away in January, 2012.
Her entire life, Veronica was always so happy to be with her family and to have
visitors. She loved people for who they were and didn’t believe in judging
others. She held a firm unshakeable trust in Our Blessed Mother and our Lord.
She was a wonderful mother, role model and best friend. She will be sadly missed
by us all.
Veronica’s sons and daughters are Carole Blomberg of Estero, Florida; James &
Kathy Schaack of Lincoln, California; Gale & James Gilge of Schofield,
Wisconsin; Mark & Katie Schaack of Dammeron Valley, Utah; and Mary & Gary
Barnett of Schofield, Wisconsin. She is also survived by many grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. A son, Edward Schaack, and
four loving granddaughters preceded her in death.
Veronica’s family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Sylvan Crossing
Assisted Living for their compassionate care and special devotion given to
Veronica for the past several years. We very much appreciate it.
Hemer Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake are assisting the family with
arrangements.
