Culbert, Kenneth Walter "Ace" (24 AUG 1940 - 4 FEB 2016)

Kenneth Walter "Ace" Culbert journeyed peacefully to his eternal home on February 4, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.

Ace was born August 24, 1940 to Kenneth and Violet (Janisch) Culbert in Milwaukee. His childhood years were spent in Merrill where he and his family resided on Lake Pesobic. He attended Adams Elementary School and later Merrill High School where he medaled in track.

His military career began by enlisting in the Army Reserves in 1957. He served 1957-1958 in the Army National Guard, 1959-1963 in the Air Force, 1963-1968 in the Coast Guard and again in the Air Force from 1968 until his retirement in 1979 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. While serving, his tours of duty included Alaska, Thailand and Da Nang, Vietnam. He retired from Strategic Air Command Air Force Base, Omaha, Nebr.

On December 28, 1973, Ace married Nancy Lee Schmidt. She survives. Ace and Nancy made their home in Hooper, Nebr. with their daughter, Theresa. Ace was an active member of the Hooper Jaycees, VFW, Eagles and American Legion.

After retirement from the military, Ace spent time helping out local farmers in the Hooper area. He received his college degree in Gunsmithing and Heating and Air Conditioning. He satisfied his desire for travel by driving semi truck over the road and hauling sand and gravel for McDowell Trucking.

Ace and Nancy also managed a successful rental business in Hooper. They spent 20 years working side by side remodeling homes for rentals.

Ace's passion was hunting and fishing with Nancy and doing leather crafts. They spent many days in the Nebraska canyons hunting and just enjoying being together as a family.

Survivors include Ace's wife of 42 years, Nancy, daughter Theresa (Todd) Barkow, Athens, daughter Kim Baker, 2 grandsons Cody and Austin, Novi Mich., and his beloved cat of 16 years, Furbee. He is further survived by 2 sisters Judy (Phil) Hill, Merrill, Mary Kay (James) Donaghue, North Carolina and 1 brother Patrick (Alice) Culbert, Madison.

Besides his parents, Ace was preceded in death by one sister, Victoria (Dick) Prather.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Athens. Friends may call on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services at the Athens funeral home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.petersonkraemer.com.

The family requests no live flowers in consideration of family health concerns. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to establish an Honorarium to a veterans organization.
