Sallis, Carol (25 December 1924 - 5 February 2016)
Carol (Anderson) Sallis passed away at the Stanley Hospital in Stanley, WI, on
February 5, 2016. Born Christmas Day 1924, Carol was the daughter of Gilman
Anderson and Olga Anason, both from Wisconsin farming families of Norwegian
descent. Carol was born at home on the ‘City Farm’ located near the Stanley-Boyd
School, on the Yellowstone Trail. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s
Lutheran Church in Stanley where she was a life-long member.
After graduating from Stanley High School in 1942, Carol worked in Chicago and
Milwaukee during World War II before returned to Stanley, where she worked for
20 years at Thorp Finance Corporation.
In 1951, Carol married Don Heidemann, who passed away in 1953 due to a car
accident. On a suggestion that year from her Pastor, Carol began teaching Sunday
school, and taught for many years. Through this, she later met Douglas Sallis
who was recently widowed with two young children (Friedemann and Christine),
Christine being in Carol’s Sunday school class. Doug and Carol married in June
1967; daughter Jennifer was born in 1969 and four-year-old Ronald was adopted in
1971.
As the children grew, Carol delighted in neighborhood and family gatherings,
school and church events. She also spent two years in Papua New Guinea where she
co-created a Girl Scout chapter and interdenominational Sunday school, and made
life-long friends. Back in Stanley, after Ron and Jen completed grade school,
Carol worked with Doug at LaSalle Medical Service until his retirement.
In 2002, Carol and Doug sold their home in Stanley and moved to Altoona from
where they undertook more travel together, notably around the world on a
freighter ship as well as extensive road trips. Although Carol enjoyed these
adventures immensely, she maintained close ties with Stanley are friends and
relatives. After Doug passed away, Carol returned to Stanley in December 2009 to
The Homeplace Assisted Living, and in October 2015 moved to Oakbrook Health &
Rehabilitation in Thorp.
Throughout her life, Carol was devoted to her family, friends and church. She
was dearly loved by many. Carol will long be remembered for her positive outlook
in life, her warmth, joy and kindheartedness. Her genuine interest in others was
reflected in conversation and story sharing, and was evident in all she did.
Carol also took pride in her beloved hometown and surrounding area, and through
a love of family history she also is appreciated for thoughtfully conserving and
documenting family genealogy, benefiting future Anderson and Anason families.
Carol is survived by her children: son, Friedemann (wife Christiane,
granddaughter Cleo); daughter, Christine (husband John Lyon, grandsons Sean,
Christopher, Daniel, Marc): son, Ronald (wife Monica and grandson Steven,
granddaughter Haliee from a previous marriage): daughter, Jennifer (husband
Stephen Perrett); nephews: Jerome (Sandy) and Rodney (Rita) Anderson and
families; Heidemann and Sallis nieces and nephews.
Carol’s funeral will be held on Satruday February 13, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in Stanley. Pastor Ken Schmidt is officiating.
Visitation is also at the church on Satruday from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., open
to all. Plombon Funeral home is assisting the family.
Memorials may be directed to the Stanley Area Historical Society or to Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church, in Carol’s name.
The Sallis family would like to express heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the
staff at The Homeplace, Oakbrook, Stanley Hospital, and to so many friends and
relatives for the much-appreciated kindness and loving support.
