Millikin, James A. Jr. (11 JUN 1941 - 9 FEB 2016)

James A. Millikin Jr., 74, Medford, passed away at his son James’ home in Menomonie on Feb. 9 peacefully in his sleep, after being in hospice care since Nov, 1, 2015, with family.

Memorial services will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19 at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford with Rev. David Clements officiating. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. until the time of services at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford.

Cremainal inurnment will take place at Medford Evergreen II Cemetery in Medford. Everyone is welcome to a luncheon at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford at 1 p.m.


James was born on June 11, 1941 in Medford to Emma O. and James E. Millikin Sr.

He graduated from Dorchester High School on May 14, 1959. He married Constance M. Higgins and then Bertha J.C.A. (Ce Ce) Bushar on Jan. 3, 1981.

After graduating high school, James enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1962 – 1966. PFC James A. Millikin Jr. was a rifleman with Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

In 1966 James was involved in an accident and suffered very serious injuries leaving him a disabled veteran for the remainder of his years. Jim was quiet and very generous, always willing to help out anyone in need. He enjoyed country and western music and movies along with his pride and joy (his “homestead”) and was a proud Marine until the day he died. James always had a great sense of humor and was very kind and polite to all. He had battled cancer over the last 15 years, until it finally ended his life.

He is survived by his two sons, James P. Millikin III (Kelly Story) of Monomonie and Shawn M. Millikin (Angela Zastrow) of Wausau; two stepchildren, Karen Sveom of Dousman and Christopher Bushar of Milwaukee; 14 grandchildren/great-grandchildren. He is further survived by two sisters, Darlene Swanson of Wausa, Neb. and Marilyn (Edward) Skrzypchak of Rothschild.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Harold “Bud” L. Swanson, a stepson, Curt Bushar and a daughter-in-law, Shannon J. Millikin.
