Nielsen, John (24 JUL 1885 – 13 MAY 1959)

John Nielsen, son of Peter and Karen Nielsen, was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on July 24, 1885. On May 26, 1910 he was united in marriage to Anna Olson in Denmark. Three of their seven children were born there, two sons, Neils and Louis, and a daughter, Pedro.

In 1919 the family came to the United States and settled at Racine, and later in Dodge County. On December 2, 1939 they came to a farm 6 miles southwest of Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.), in the Town of Eaton, where they resided ever since.

Mr. Nielsen, who suffered a stroke, was a patient at Memorial Hospital, Neillsville, but was taken to a nursing home there on Saturday, May 9, He passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 1959.

The body was brought to the Hill Funeral Home where it lay in state until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, when it was taken to the church.

Funeral services were held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m. Ira Tanner, pastor, officiated. Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.

During the service Mrs. Richard Thompson and Mrs. Leslie Johnson sang "Light of Home" and "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me," accompanied by Mrs. Don Warner at the organ.

The pallbearers were John Sussa Sr., James Susa, Ernest Baughman, Clark Hatton, John Fitzl and Peter Korntved.

Mr. Nielsen is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Isabell) Mantey, Watertown; four sons, Niels and Louis, Milwaukee; Aage and Henry, Greenwood; 12 grandchildren; a half-brother, Peter Jensen at Fort Meade Veterans Home, Dakota; a half-sister, Mrs. Marie Borup, Denmark.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters, Pedro and Gertrude.
