Aichinger, John (Found Not Guilty – 13 Jan 1919)
Circuit Court opened again on Monday afternoon with Judge Wickham of Eau Claire
on the bench. It seems evident that the balance of the jury cases will be tried
this week and the jury discharged. On Monday afternoon the case of the State vs.
John Aichinger was started. In this case, the State charged Aichinger with
selling liquor in violation of the city’s dry condition. On Oct. 16th the city
authorities found a considerable quantity of beer on the premises of the
defendant and this capture was brought into court. The beer and the evidence of
one witness who testified to having bought whiskey off Aichinger on several
occasions was the bulk of the testimony presented by the State. As the witness
had testified in the preliminary examination to not having ever bought liquor
off Aichinger, his testimony seems not to have been taken as reliable by the
jury, and Aichinger was found not guilty.
