Neville, Martin (12 NOV 1839 – 22 Jan 1919)

Martin Neville, a resident of Clark County since 1866, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Katherine Maher at Janesville on Wednesday, Jan. 22, aged 79 years, 2 months and 10 days. Mr. Neville was born at Quebec, Canada, on Nov.12th, 1839. He was educated in the common schools and at the age of 16 years went to Maine where he spent 4 years in the pineries. In the fall of 1859 he went south and engaged on a steamboat, following this vocation on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers until 1863, when he went to Australia with a vessel loaded with timber. He returned by the way of Liverpool, so had made the trip around the world. He then spent a winter in Maine and one in Pennsylvania and in 1866 came to Neillsville. He worked that winter for Robert Ross and the following years homesteaded the 160-acre farm which remained his home for many years.

Mr. Neville was united in marriage to Mary I. Wright on July 29, 1869, and nine children were born to them, seven of whom survive their parents. Mrs. Neville died 35 years ago. The surviving children are Bert and Lee of Rhame, N.D., James of Morristown, N.D., Mrs. Alice Boss of Milton Junction, Mrs. Katherine Maher of Janesville, Mrs. Lillian Raymond of Madison and Mrs. Maud Arnold of Stockton, Cal. Also the following grandchildren: Leslie Marshal and Anthony Raymond, Ruth Marie Neville, May and Dale Arnold. The remains were brought to Greenwood Saturday where funeral services were conducted last Sunday afternoon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rev. Charles Achtelik officiating. He was laid to rest in the family lot in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Neville was a man of the very highest type of integrity. He was genial and pleasant to meet and an interesting personality because of his varied experiences and wide travels. He had been in poor health for some time, but even though expected, his death is a matter of very deep and sincere regret to all his old-time friends and associates.
