Hughes, James (Gassed In War – abt. 1918)
James Hughes arrived home last week from France. He had been severely gassed in
action and was incapacitated for further service. He is recovering quite nicely
from the trouble, but still feels the effects of his gassing. He did not see
quite as much action in France as he had hoped for, being gassed shortly after
he got into the fight, but he is enthusiastic over his experiences and says no
amount of money could buy them from him.
On Monday Pete Cagle arrived home from France, he having also been gassed. He
was a victim of a gas attack in the battle of Chateau Thierry and was in the
hospital when the armistice was signed and so was not sent back to his company.
He, like Hughes, is highly pleased with the trip and the world he has seen. Pete
is the first of the old Co. A to arrive home from France. He was a member of the
old company and went with them to Camp MacArthur, but suffered the same fate
that the rest of the boys did, in that the company was split up and the boys
variously assigned in the 32nd Regiment.
