Sylvester Champa, former Bemidji State College athlete, was awarded the James R.
Koefod award by Dr. C.R. Sattgast, College President, at the college convocation
Wednesday morning.
The James R. Koefod award is presented annually to the college athlete earning
an award in a major sport, who received the highest grade point average for the
preceding year.
It is given in honor of James R. Koefod, former Bemidji State College student
and athlete, who was killed while in service, and the award is donated by the
Koefod family.
The award is a plaque which is in the college trophy case and each year the
winner's name is engraved on this plaque.
Champa lettered in football and wrestling, and earned a grade point average of
2.36. He is currently studying for a Master's Degree as a graduate assistant at
the University of Southern Illinois at Carbondale.
At BSC he majored in biological science and physical education and earned a
minor in health. He came to BSC from Virginia Junior College and his home is in
Greenwood (Clark Co.), Wisconsin.
