Ila was born on February 10th, 1935, the daughter of Russel and Garnet (Hepfer) Welch in the village of Gilman, WI.

She graduated from Gilman High School in 1953, and then went on to attend Eau Claire Technical School graduating with a Secretary Certification. Her career highlights include working as a secretary to the county nurse in Medford, working as a medical transcriptionist at the Taylor County Memorial Hospital and then in the same capacity at Marshfield Clinic, and finishing her career working for 10+ years for Bill Heiting at New York Life Insurance Company in Marshfield.

On May 22nd, 1971, Ila was united in marriage to the love of her life David Markus at Zion Lutheran Church in Colby, WI. Ila and Dave became proud parents to their daughter Laurie on October 31st, 1972, and proud grandparents to Mitchell Markus Schade on April 22nd, 2005, and Bryce David Schade on October 10th, 2007.

Ila enjoyed gardening, canning, painting, embroidering (loved to paint with thread!) making floral arrangements, making cakes for special people and special occasions, and spending time with family & friends. She took special pride in sharing her talents with those she loved. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandsons’ Mitchell and Bryce, attending their soccer, baseball, basketball, and football games and watching them grow. Those that knew Ila the best will miss her kindness, her resilience, her patience, her generosity, and most of all the love she had for her family. Her extended family will miss her every day and especially each year at Thanksgiving which was such an important holiday to her. Dave, Laurie, Mike and the boys will especially miss cool fall nights on the deck at Laurie and Mike’s watching the geese fly over.

Ila is survived by her husband, Dave, her daughter, Laurie Markus Schade (Mike); her grandsons, Mitchell and Bryce; her sister Bonnie (Hilmer) Eckstrom of Gilman, WI; her brother Ray (Sandy) Welch of Gilman, WI: sister-in-law; JoAnne Goelden, Wausau, WI; nieces and nephews, Karen & (Ron) Gormong, Spooner, WI, Dale Eckstrom, Aurora, IL; Dan (Magan) Eckstrom, Bonduel, WI; Darren (Brandi) Eckstrom, Cedarburg, WI; David (Loralyn) Eckstrom, Hayward, WI; Melissa (Nick) Phelps, Elk River, MN; Rebecca (Chad) Oberle, Hudson, WI; James (Jodi) Welch, Maple Lake, MN; Jon (Jessy) Welch, Hudson, WI; Philip (Katie) Welch, Westby, WI; Vince (Shariff) Welch, Buffalo, MN; Nancy (Al) Keller; Janesville, WI; Mike Goelden; Wausau, WI, as well as 35 great nieces and nephews. Keeping up on what was going on in all of their lives was very important to her. She will truly be missed.
