Marty Zickert, 19-year-old second baseman for the Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.)
Merchants, has been named to represent the Marshfield New Herald in the annual
Silver Sluggers game held at Milwaukee last Saturday morning.
Zickert, who has been burning up the Cloverbelt League with his hitting the past
month, was selected from a field of 34 boys who took part in the Silver Sluggers
School sponsored here in June by the Marshfield New Herald, in cooperation with
the Milwaukee Braves.
A 1958 graduate of Greenwood High School, Zickert stands 6 feet tall and weighs
175 pounds. He throws and bats right handed.
The Greenwood youth joined 21 other youngsters between the ages of 16 and 21,
who comprised the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan All Star team that played the
Milwaukee Metropolitan All Stars at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at Milwaukee County
Stadium. Zickert was one of two second basemen picked.
The big weekend started Friday when Zickert was taken to Milwaukee as a guest of
the News Herald and the Braves. Friday night, Zickert, his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Martin Zickert Sr., and his Coach, Cy Buker, were guests of the Braves at the
Braves' game with the Chicago Cubs.
The parents and coash will also be guests of the Braves for Saturday afternoon's
game with the Cubs, and also for the big banquet held Saturday night at the
Plankinton House.
Marty did right well for himself in the game Saturday, getting one hit, and he
was hit by a pitched ball in his other trip to the plate.
On his fine showing he was picked to go to Waycross, Ga., next spring for
training at the Braves' farm center.
