Edward William Trunkel was born on Jan. 14, 1918, in Willard, to Anton and Anna
(nee Stalzer) Trunkel, original settlers of Willard. He was raised on the family
farm and received his education at the Willard State Graded School and Greenwood
High School. As a young man, Ed worked in the harvest fields out west before
being inducted into the U.S. Army on May 17, 1945. He served his country until
his honorable discharge on Sept. 17, 1946. Ed married Darlene Severson on March
7, 1945, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Greenwood. He and his wife farmed
and raised their family in Willard, and he also spent many years hauling milk,
the heavy cans. They later moved to Greenwood, where he worked at Greenwood
Homes until retiring. Ed was a proud 60-year member of the Greenwood American
Legion. He was a fisherman, hunter and avid baseball player and fan. In his
later years, Ed enjoyed a daily drive, but had to get home in time to watch his
favorite team, the Braves.
He is survived by his two sons: Dennis (Judith) Trunkel of Milwaukee, and
DuWayne "Butch" (Sheryl) Trunkel of Willard; one daughter: Janice (Jerry) Ackley
of Sheridan, Wyo.; seven grandchildren: Tammy (Dan) Susa, Denyse Trunkel, Darcie
Trunkel, Lori (Ryan) Luder, Jillan (Matthew) Trepczyk, Kurt (Kristi) Trunkel,
and Justin (Jessica) Ackley; eight great-grandchildren: Cole and Jesse Susa,
