On Sunday afternoon, May 7th, 1961, the Chamber of Commerce presented a plaque
to Carl C. Hoehne, this year's nominee as "man of the year."
Because Mr. Hoehne was incapacitated, the Chamber did not hold a dinner, but
presented its awarded to Mr. Hoehne at an informal gathering held on the front
porch of his son, George.
Inscribed on the plaque are the words, "Carl Hoehne, 1901 – 1961. In tribute to
personal integrity and long esteemed service to the business community of
Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.). Chamber of Commerce of Greenwood."
Along with the plaque, a letter was presented which read: "The Chamber of
Commerce, on behalf of all the people of Greenwood, takes this opportunity to
congratulate you on being selected (The Man of the Years of Greenwood.) The
business which you have operated has done much to add to the well being and
financial strength of our community.
Your business, as you know, is the oldest establishment operating under the same
management in Greenwood. /Without the high business ideals that you have aspired
to, we know that this accomplishment would not have been made.
We hope that you will have a fast and complete recovery of health, and that you
will be with us shortly."
The Chamber of Commerce of Greenwood.
After the presentation of the letter and plaque, a brief period of reminiscing
occurred, during which time Mr. Hoehne briefly related some events of the past
concerning the operation of his business. To those present, it was quite evident
that Mr. Hoehne is still just as agile mentally as ever, and that he still wants
to "get back to work."
