Nyckel, Henry L. (1 May 1921 - 3 May 2016) With Flag

Henry L. Nyckel, 95, of Stanley, died, Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at his home with his family by his side. He was born on May 1, 1921, in Thorp, the son of the late Adam and Josephine (Dubicki) Nyckel. He was raised in the Thorp area. He joined Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at Perkinstown, where he worked from July 5, 1938, to June 30, 1940. On May 2, 1943 he was united in marriage to Eugenia Staron in Chicago. They celebrated over 70 years of marriage before her passing in 2014.

The couple lived in Bellwood, Illinois from 1953 until the 1990s moving to Stanley, where they have lived since. Henry retired from Sunbeam Corp. after 35 years, retiring as a quality Control Manager. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, golfing, and being a provider for his family. Henry was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and All Saints Parish.

Henry was drafted into the Army on November 27, 1942, and was assigned to the 103rd Infantry Division of the 328 Combat Engineers, Company C. His specific training was in engineering and Morse code. He frequently talked about many friends who were lost in battles during the war.

He is survived by his children: Pat (Phillip) Harper of Bradenton, FL, Jerry (Leslie) Nyckel of West Chicago, Duayne (Lori Shilling) Nyckel of Carol Stream, IL, and Shelley (Tom) Epperson of Mattoon, Il; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eugenia (2014); and sister, Wanda Wartolec.

A funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Stanley with Father William Felix officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Czestochowa Catholic Cemetery, Stanley. Visitation was from 9 a.m. until time of departure to church at the Plombon Funeral Home Saturday morning.
