Back in 1891 W.H. Spears felt the City of Greenwood needed a newspaper, and thus
was the start of the Greenwood Gleaner. Now 72 years later, the paper is still
being published weekly in the City of Greenwood. The faith of Mr. Spears in
starting a paper here is expressed in the fact that his paper is still going 72
years later.
Other owners of the paper were H.H. Hartson, J.E. Noyes, and W.F. Neuenfeldt,
who took over in 1916. In 1946 Mr. Neuenfeldt sold the papers to his son Albert,
who has been at the helm since. So in 72 years this paper has had only 5 owners.
The Neuenfeldt family has owned the paper 45 of these 72 years, which I believe
is a record of sorts for the state.
Last year the following was published: "1960 ends the first complete year in
which only one person has produced the paper, which in the past was handled by
three or four people. The hours have been long and hard, and we hope that 1961
will help ease this situation a great deal." Needless to say, 1961 did not ease
the problem any, although some adjustments were made to make our "deadline" less
pressing.
Now on to 1962 with firm resolution to do our utmost to continue being a service
to Greenwood, Willard, and the surrounding area. Our hope is that you will
continue to use this newspaper for your advertising messages to your customers,
and that more local business places will see fit to make more use of "Their
local paper" to advertise.
Join us in celebrating our 72 birthday.
