Schaefer, Christine (Burger) (27 SEP 1923 - 24 NOV 2011)

Christine Schaefer, 89, died Saturday afternoon, November 24, at the House of the Dove in Marshfield. Christine

Bertha Burger was born to Otillie and Joseph Burger on September 27, 1923 in Athens, Wisconsin, the fourth of eleven children.

She attended St. Anthony elementary school in Athens and graduated from Athens High School in 1942. Christine was united in marriage to Werner Joseph Schaefer on January 31, 1948.

Christine and Werner raised a family of ten children on their farm, located three miles west of Milan. She followed a strict routine of grocery shopping every Thursday and baking on Saturday. Known for her sweet rolls and bread, her other cooking talents are celebrated in a family cookbook of her recipes. She was a member of the St. Thomas Altar Society at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Milan. Embroidery, crossword puzzles, playing cribbage and bowling were her favorite hobbies. She participated in state and national bowling tournaments. Baseball was Kris’ favorite spectator sport. She watched Werner pitch for the Milan team, and then enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers.

Christine is survived by her children, Maxine (Bryce) Luchterhand, Unity; Karen (Richard) Verschay, Greenwood; Kevin Schaefer, Spooner; Joette (Mike) Lulloff, Owen; Jon (Kathy) Schaefer, Stratford; Jeffry (Rebecca) Schaefer, Abbotsford; Jay (Cathy) Schaefer, Manchaca, Texas; Merlin Schaefer, Colby; Jamie (Diane) Schaefer, Wausau; Kimberly (Dennis) Kusiak, Fenwood; 33 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters Agnes Gianoli, Cecilia Johnson, Theresa David, and one brother, David (Marilyn).

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two infant daughters, three sisters Marie, Sylvia and Janice, three brothers Joseph, Leonard and George, one infant grandson and an infant great-grandson.

Visitation will be at Maurina Funeral Home in Abbotsford from 4 – 8 PM Friday, November 30 with a prayer service beginning at 7:30 PM. There will also be visitation from 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Milan, Saturday, December 1. Funeral services will begin at the church at 10:30 AM with Reverend Charles Hiebl officiating. Pallbearers will be Kris’ six sons. Interment will be in the Milan Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made payable to Ministry Home Care – Hospice and sent to Hospice Donations, 303 W. Upham St., Marshfield, WI 54449.
