Dr. Hale W. Hunt, La Crosse, will received the Distinguished Alumni Award at the
Greenwood High School graduation program Tuesday, May 29th, 1962. This award,
created by the high school and the Alumni Association, is being presented this
years for the first time, and is planned as an annual award.
Dr. Hunt was born in Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) in 1896 on Easter Sunday. He
attended grade school and high school in Greenwood and graduated with the class
of 1914, a class of four boys and ten girls. While in high school he was active
in athletics and played in the city band.
After graduating from high school, he worked as a clerk in the post office for a
year and then with the Blodgett Company, Marshfield, which later became Roddis
Lumber Company. He enlisted in the army in 1917 and went to France with the 22nd
Division.
After returning from France in 1919, he entered the University of Wisconsin, and
later transferred to Marquette University where he graduated from the School of
Dentistry, graduating from the first four-year course in that profession in that
school.
Dr. Hunt began his dental practice at La Crosse during the summer of 1924 and
has continued in the same location since that time. He has been active in a
variety of civic programs. He has served about 25 years on the City Board of
Health, thirty years on the Salvation Army advisory board, and was a member of
the draft board during World War II. He is past president of the La Crosse
District Dental Society, Past Commander of the American Legion Post and made a
trip to France with a picked American Legion Band in 1927, past president of the
La Crosse Businessmen's Club and has been active in church work.
Dr. Hunt is a sports fan, having played semi-professional baseball with
Mayville, West Bend and Fond du Lac. He likes to fish trout, collect stamps and
work in his rose garden.
