Antarctica (FHTNC) – Edwin G. Kippenhan, construction electrician third class,
USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Kippenhan of Greenwood (Clark Co.), Wisconsin, is
taking part in the Antarctica undertaking, "Operation Deepfreeze 63," at McMurdo
Sound Antarctica.
He is one of nearly 100 men in the Navy making up this unit, which will perform
duties in support of the scientific parties in the frozen wasteland, placing and
resupplying them through the four months of continuous daylight.
This season will be perhaps the most ambitious phase of Deepfreeze operations on
record.
Personnel stationed at McMurdo already have experienced some of the warmest
weather the continent ever sees – a balmy 15 degrees above zero -- and a
"whiteout," where the ground and air blend in a white fog-like condition that
makes flight almost impossible.
