As I unlimbered my camera, Eddy grasped the lapels of his suit coat, gave a slight tug, so that the coat hung just right. Eddy believes that a man should "Look sharp" even while writing out a sales ticket. This may be the reason he finds satisfaction in his work.
Eddy was born at Willard (Clark Co., Wis.), but his family moved with him to Gary, Indiana when he was six. He attended school there until he was 11, then they moved back to Willard. The "vich" on Eddy's name indicates its source is Serbia.
Eddy enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1939, and went to Quartermaster School in Philadelphia. He was captured by the Japanese at Wake Island, taken as a prisoner of war to Tokyo, where he and his fellow prisoners were exhibited. Then he was taken to Shanghai, then back to Osaka. When the latter city was bomed by American planes, the prisoners were taken north to Hokkaido Island, where eventually the American forces liberated them.
He attended a church function at St. Anthony's Church in Loyal, some years ago. It was near Eater, and there was a pretty college student named Marilyn Bertz, home for the holidays. "Boy, I'd like to meet that girl!" he said. A friend arranged an instruction; the meetings continued. Now. As Mrs. Eddy B. she is the mother of three children.
Eddy's brother worked for Stewart's, and as soon as Eddy came home, his brother asked him to take his route for a day while he went for his physical exam. He did – and his brother went right on into military service, so Eddy stayed on with Stewart's until 1949. Then he set up "Eddy's Tog Shop" down near Artac's Hardware. Two years ago he moved to his present location. He also rents formal clothing, and arranges for cleaning service.
You can see Eddy whenever the Greenwood Legion Drill Team marches. He "Looks sharp" there, too. Eddy hopes for an opportunity to help his townsmen and countrymen to "look sharp" and feel comfortable – in good clothing.
