The man in the picture is an inventor – the machine he is watching is his "baby." It is used for packaging butter, and it does a better job than conventional machinery. That is why Allen invented it.
Allen is associated with the production end of the Wuethrich Creamery, while John works with sales. Allen lived on the farm until he was 21, but did not like to milk cows. Whe he told his dad that he was leaving, John Sr. offered him a job in the plant, in order to keep him in the family. So Allen became a licensed butter maker.
In his part of the business, there is no opportunity to go stale. He finds that he must continually study new techniques and machinery, and this often necessitates travel. There are always new products to investigate too. The dairy industry of Australia and New Zealand, for example, has much to teach us.
Allen grew up together with Nell Hartson; her father was postmaster in Greenwood. She went away to school, then worked as a beauty operator in Eau Claire, Marshfield, and Menomonee. After going together for six or eight years, they concluded that life together would be better, so they married. They have two children: Linda and Sam.
He has been associated with the School Board since 1947. This relationship has provided both headaches and satisfactions. In fact, at the time that I talked with him, he knew where he was to be for the next six nights, and it would not be at home!
But Allen enjoys life. He goes deer hunting, while his brother hunts for birds. Last fall he went moose hunting. He likes to fish, especially since no one can get him on the phone while he is fishing. He says he has done more of the things he has wanted to do in the last ten years than in the thirty-five before that. I asked him how he could do it. He said, "I work like the dickens when I work, and I play like the dickens when I play." I guess that is a pretty good formula.
