Bungert, Harry R. (4 APR 1918 – 20 MAY 1968)
Harry R. Bungert, 50, of the town of Johnson (Marathon Co., Wis.), route, 2,
Athens, died unexpectedly at 6:45 p.m. Monday. He apparently suffered a heart
attack while helping tear down a cheese factory near his home.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic
Church, Milan, with the Rev. Charles Schumacher officiating. Burial will take
place at St. Mary's Cemetery at Marathon.
Pallbearers for the interment will be Lawrence Augustine, Leonard Jantsch, Peter
Horacek, John Kralcik, Robert Guralski and Mathew Poehnelt.
The American Legion posts of Edgar and Athens will form an honor guard.
The Gilles and Son Funeral Home of Athens is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Bungert was born April 4, 1918, at Marathon. His marriage to the former
Gertrude Barts, who survives him, took place at Marathon August 31, 1940. He is
a veteran of World War II, and for the past 18 years, lived on a farm in the
town of Johnson. Since January of 1968, he worked as a substitute mail clerk at
the Athens post office, and he also worked for Toelle Surge Service of Colby.
He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church at Milan, St. Leo's Court of the
Catholic Order of Foresters of Marathon, and the Sawyer-Drumm American Legion
Post at Edgar. He also served as zone chairman for the dairy committee of the
Marathon County NFO.
Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Dale Augustine of the town
of Halsey, and Jean Bunger, at home, and two grandchildren. Also surviving are
his mother, Mrs. Raymond (Anna) Bungert, a brother, LaVern of Edgar, and two
sisters, Mrs. James Luetschwager of Athens and Mrs. Joseph Butalla of Marathon.
