Baumgart, Otto (30 JUN 1886 – 18 MAY 1968)
Otto Baumgart, 81, Unity, died at his home at 6:15 p.m. Saturday evening, May
18, 1968, following a lingering illness.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's
Catholic Church, Colby. Interment was made in the parish cemetery. The Rev. John
B. Pinion, pastor of St. Mary's, officiated at the services.
A general rosary service was held at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby Tuesday
evening at 8:30 p.m.
Mr. Baumgart was born in Colby on June 30, 1886. He lived with his parents on a
farm north of Unity and received his education in the local schools. At the age
of 14 he started working as a cheesemaker, and worked winters in logging camps.
His marriage to the former Anna Orth took place at Madison on April 26, 1911.
After their marriage the couple lived at Fifield for a short time. They then
returned to this area, where he operated the Hull Co-op Cheese Factory for 14
years. He also operated the Laabs Cheese Factory in Milan for two years.
In 1929, he started his own cheese plant, the Little Grove Cheese Factory, which
he operated until 1948. From then until the time of his death he lived on the
farm where he was raised as a boy.
His wife died in March 1964.
He leaves a son, Harold Baumgart of Unity, and a daughter, Mrs. Otto (Marie)
Sill of Kansas City, Mo. There are two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A
brother, Charles Baumgart of Fifield, and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Lulloff of
Colby, also survived.
Preceding him in death were a brother, Godfrey Baumgart, and a sister, Mary
Mathiesen.
