Madison – Jerome A. Behrens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Behrens, Greenwood (Clark
Co., Wis.), is among 27 entering and 41 first and second year medical students
at the University of Wisconsin here who have received $800 for summer research
fellowships.
Funds for the 10-week program have been made available through the National
Institutes of Health and private foundations.
Each student who was chosen for the award by the Medical School Summer Student
Research Fellowship Committee, is doing research in a specific area under the
direction of a member of the UW Medical School faculty.
According to Dr. Robert D. Coye, assistant dean of the Medical School, the aim
of the program is to provide support for medical students who display an
interest in research, primarily in the basic medical sciences.
Dr. Coye noted this is the second year that students who will enter medical
school in the fall, have participated in the program. Seven more are
participating than were last year. He pointed out the purpose of the Medical
School Summer Fellowship Program is to ultimately lead an increased number of
medical school graduates into careers in medical research.
Behrens is a second year medical student in medicine.
