The Times man made a run out to Greenwood, Clark County, one day last week over
the "branch" and was surprised to find a beautiful little city nestling on a
hill in the midst of a grand farming country. The city contains about 600
inhabitants, has four hotels, a bakery, churches, and a number first-class
business houses, among the latter that of A. M. White, is considered the best.
The bank of Greenwood is organized
under the state banking law, has elegant quarters and fixtures and plenty of
deposits. The Gleaner, a five column quarto, gathers up all the local news and
is doing a good business. The people were all doing their best to arrange for
the soldiers reunion which is now being held in the city, by the Clark County
Association.
On the way up the "branch," the first to attract our attention was a remark from
Bert Griffin, "See those Holstein cattle" and later on, "there are some Aldermen
cattle." At Spokeville, we found the mayor, J. C. Marsh busy with his extensive
stave and lumber business and guessing on the nominee.
Further up, Loyal loomed up like a city of considerable proportions. Quite an
extensive lumber, stave and heading business is done at Loyal. It is also
located in a good hardwood and farming section. Greenwood being the terminal of
the "branch" is just booming and expects to become quite an important point at
no distant day.
