Granton (27 Mar 1919)
George and Fred Vine, with the latter’s son, Ernest, returned from their trip to
Crandon last Friday. They report “Grandma” Vine to be somewhat improved in
health.
Mrs. W.A. Campman and daughter, Jean, and Mrs. Carrie Holmes of Neillsville
spent Tuesday here with relatives in the Homer Downer sugar bush.
The Misses Emma and Aleda Gluch of Neillsville called on Granton and Lynn
friends Monday, when Miss Aleda accepted a clerkship at the J.L. Keller store in
Lynn.
Oswald Pischer accompanied his brother-in-law, Willie Mallig, and the latter’s
father, Gottlieb Mallig, to Marshfield last Friday, where at St. Joseph’s
Hospital Willie has since been a patient and underwent a surgical operation next
day.
Miss Ruby Winn, for the past nine months a Red Cross nurse in France, arrives
here Monday morning, discharged from service. Miss Winn was one of the hundred
nurses who left Milwaukee about a year ago with Base Hospital Unit No. 22, which
was stationed at Bordeaux. This hospital unit was considered one of the finest
and most efficient in France, having accommodations for 20,000 patients. Ruby
holds the enviable record of not having lost a single patient while in service
at that hospital. Her ward accommodated 90 patents at a time, and among the men
she nursed back to health were many wounded German prisoners. She expects to
stay here with her parents this summer and take a well-earned rest.
Carl Braatz’s horse hitched to a carriage and tied in the Wegner sheds here
Saturday afternoon, took French leave, and alone and all unnoticed, set out for
home. Herbert Lowe, in his new six-cylinder Buick, coming up behind him on the
Ridge road near the animal’s last turn for home, couldn’t toot him into giving
up any of the road, and ignorant of the horse being driverless, Herbert bumped
into the carriage, and not only badly disfigured the carriage, but likewise
damaged his own rig, twisting up a fender and breaking a lamp. Luckily though,
there was no loss of life or even an abrasion of the skin of either man or
beast.
The village caucus was held at the village hall Wednesday, March 12. F.G. Hart
acted as chairman and H.L. Berg as secretary. The following officers were
nominated:
P.J. Kemmeter, village president; H.L. Berg, village clerk; C.A. Willie,
treasurer; Chas. Neinas, assessor; R.R. Rath, trustee for 2 years; Dan Rausch,
trustee for 2 years; F.G., Hart, trustee for 2 years; Harry Birch, constable;
G.E. Amidon, justice of the peace; E.R. Wonser, police justice. F.J. Baer,
Ernest Dixon and W.D. Rose were appointed caucus committee.
