Eleven upper classmen at Stevens Point State University will earn one academic
credit next month through visits to such places as the Bolshoi Theater, Russian
factories and collective farms and landmarks that have made cities behind the
Iron Curtain famous.
They will be part of a contingent of 179 students and faculty from the Wiscosnin
State University System who will leave by a chartered jet plane from Chicago on
April 1, 1971 for a three week tour of Russia and Eastern Europe.
They will fly to Leningrad, then divide into six groups, each with its own
itinerary.
Leading the delegation from Stevens Point will be Dr. Adrian Van Lieshout of the
geography department. Two other faculty members, Dr. William Stielstra, vice
president for student affairs, and James Sebanc of the geography department,
also will be in the group.
A local student taking this tour is Barbara Liebzeit, a sophomore sociology
major and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Liebzeit of Route 2, Greenwood (Clark
Co., Wis.).
This is the third consecutive year the system has sponsored such a travel study
program, and it has had the blessing of administrators here, because the 12,000
mile trip ties in with the school's Russian and East European Study Program.
With the Stevens Point students will be persons from Eau Claire, La Crosse,
Oshkosh, Platteville, River Falls, Stout, Superior, and Whitewater.
Head the total program will be Professor Robert Frost, director of the Institute
for International Studies at Platteville.
