Plans by a Medford resident to build a BMX-style race track in the city got a
warm reception at the Medford City Council Committee-of-the-Whole meeting
Monday, with the primary concern about placement of the facility.
Ben Way of Medford proposed building an oval track featuring jumps, bunker
corners and measuring between 900 and 1,200 feet long. He explained that the
track would be used for bicycle racing events as well as by the general public.
“I am not asking the city for money, only the land that is needed to make this
track a success,” Way said, noting he would seek private donations for the
start-up costs of between $10,000 and $15,000 he anticipated.
Way said he would start a not-for-profit group to build and maintain the
facility. The track would be surrounded by fence with only a narrow opening to
prevent access by snowmobiles, ATV’s or other motorized vehicles. He said it
would be strictly a non-motorized track.
