Ripplinger, Ben (Close Call – 18 Apr 1919)
Ben Ripplinger, a merchant located at Ripplinger, new station on the Soo line
eight miles from Spencer, met with an accident while in the city yesterday,
Friday, that came near ending his earthly career. He was in the act of crossing
the street south of the Soo Depot when he was struck by the switch engine which
was switching on the house track. He was knocked down and how he managed to
escape the wheels will remain a mystery to him. It was an act of providence that
saved his life. The house track is only a few feet from the depot and as Ben, in
crossing the street, stepped on the track, he neither saw nor heard the train. A
grip he was carrying fell under the train and was cut in two. His right leg was
considerably bruised. – Marshfield Herald
