Program Honoring Veterans (Loyal - 2016)
Program Honoring Veterans
Emcee Diane Weggen, department of Wisconsin American Legion Auxiliary historian,
welcomes the gathering to the special recognition dinner for veterans held Sept.
18, at the Loyal American Legion Hall. A total of 113 people attended the event,
including more than 60 area veterans. (Contributed photo)
More than 60 area veterans attended a program and dinner honoring them, with
special recognition given to the Vietnam veterans, Sept. 18 at the Loyal
American Legion Hall.
After time for socializing, a program featured guest speaker Vietnam veteran
Denny Henke, who reminded the audience that the entire family sacrifices with a
soldier is serving. He finished by thanking all who have served.
Henke, an Owen resident, served in the U. S. Army and the U. S. Navy.
Emcee Diane Weggen, Department of Wisconsin American Legion Auxiliary historian,
shared a quote from George Washington.
“The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no
matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive
veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by our nation,” Weggen
said. She felt this quote is especially fitting for the recognition of Vietnam
veterans enduring disdain after serving.
Past National Honorary Juniors American Legion Auxiliary Vice President Caitlin
Rosemeyer from Thorp Unit #118 sang “Traveling Soldier” and “Proud to be an
American.” Rosemeyer is proud of her grandfathers, Justin Rosemeyer, WWII, of
Thorp Legion Post #118, and Ron Lindgren, Vietnam deceased member of Loyal
Legion Post #175 and Colby VFW Post. She honors them by being active in the
American Legion Auxiliary.
Clark County American Legion Auxiliary members from Greenwood, Loyal,
Neillsville, Owen and Thorp prepared and served a dinner for 113 attendees.
This event was held to thank area veterans. The program was enjoyed by the
veterans and their guests.
