At the 60-year class reunion of the Loyal Class of 1956, the principal of Loyal
High School, Christopher Lindner (left), accepted the presentation of a plaque
by Clarence “Sparky” Rogstad with Diann Shefchik, chairman of the reunion
committee. The plaque has the history of how L.H.S. Maroons became the L.H.S.
Greyhounds. The class of ‘56 was instrumental in the change as Sparky Rogstad
and the Letterman’s Club approached the coach, Dennis Helixon, and then
Principal Warner Berry with the idea. This idea was voted on by an assembly of
all the high school students. As a result of the vote the school became the
Loyal Greyhounds in December 1954. Sparky and other members of the Letterman’s
Club made the “Greyhound” that was hung in the gym along with the other 3-C
conference school mascots.
