Cox, Marcia Mae (2 May 1924 – 11 September 2016)
Marcia Mae (Frei) Cox, 92, of Onalaska passed away Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at
the Gundersen health System in La Crosse.
She was born in Alma Center May 3, 1924, to August and Merle (Bush) Janke and
graduated from Neillsville High School in 1942. She married Donald Frei Sept.
12, 1942, and he preceded her in death in 1995. She then married Eric Cox in
2001 and he preceded her in death in 2010.
Marcia, along with her husband, Don, owned and operated the Dairy State Super
Market in Black River Falls for ten years. After selling the business, Marcia
focused on painting, a passion and natural gift she possessed for which she had
no formal training. She painted landscapes and still life forms for many years
and sold many of her paintings throughout the country. Marcia was very devoted
to her family and was a nurturing and loving grandmother to her grandchildren
and great-grandchildren. She was also a very dedicated animal lover throughout
her life.
Marcia is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Gaylord) Simonson of Onalaska; her
son, Donald (Sue) Frei of Lake Holcomb; five grandchildren: Randy (Julie)
Simonson of Trempealeau, Robert (Ann) Simonson of Altoona, Lori (John) Snyder of
Onalaska, Benjamin Frei of Eau Claire and Jonathan (Colleen) Frei, Middletown,
CT; and six great-grandchildren: Andrew (Rachel) Simonson, Aaron Simonson,
Adalyn Simonson, Hannah Snyder, Alyvia Snyder and Sarah Snyder.
In addition to her husbands, Marcia was also preceded in death by an infant
sister, Wava Victoria Janke; and a brother, Gerald Janke.
A Memorial Service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, at Schumacher-Kish
Funeral and Cremation Services, 907 Sand Lake Rd., Onalaska. Rev. Scott Skogen
officiated. Burial took place in the East Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends
called from 1 p.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to your local animal shelter or
