USS Ranger – Boilerman First Class Clarence H. Mierkey, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Evan Mierkey of route 1, Colby, was promoted to his present rank while serving
aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Ranger in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard
in Bremerton, Washington.
Petty Officer Mierkey is assigned to Number Three Main Machinery Room. He
supervises 24 men in the maintenance and operation of the steam system in the
machinery area.
Steam is used on board to run the electrical generator supply the evaporators to
heat and purify saltwater for use by the crew and to supply steam to the
Ranger's four catapults.
Petty Officer Mierkey is presently training the new men under his supervision in
the Boilerman ratings.
A graduate of public high school in Birnamwood, Petty Officer Mierkey entered
the service in February of 1954.
