Sorensen, Cathy (1 MAR 1956 – 24 SEP 1967)
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, September 27, for 11
year old Cathy Sorensen, who lost her life in a train-bike accident on Sunday,
September 24, 1967 at Mauston.
Final rites were conducted from Nazareth Lutheran Church at Withee, with Rev.
H.W. Luetkehoelter officiating, and burial made in the parish cemetery. Serving
as pallbearers were Harold Christensen, Herman Rabska, Clinton Albert, Leon
Bruchert, Lester Hansen and Dr. A.A. Jarvis.
Cathy and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Sorensen, Withee (Clark Co., Wis.),
had gone to Mauston where they were visiting the home of his sister and
brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Einar Anderson. Cathy and her cousin were returning
home from the Sunday matinee on bicycles when the accident happened. Signal
lights on the Milwaukee railway crossing were said to be working and some cars
had already stopped for the oncoming train. Her cousin made it across the
tracks, but witnesses were uncertain whether Cathy didn't know how to brake the
borrowed bike to a stop, or not.
Born March 1, 1956 at Stanley, Cathy was a 6th grader in the Owen-Withee School
system, a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Youth Group, and had been active in
various young people's activities in her community.
Her tragic death is mourned by a host of friends and classmates, who share the
sorrow with her parents; a half-brother, Jack Leibke of Minneapolis; her
grandmother, Mrs. Axel Sorensen of Withee, and a grandfather, Mr. Joe Goetthelf
of St. Paul.
