Thurs, Gordon ''Gordie'' (30 APR 1928 - 15 JUL 2001)
Gordon ''Gordie'' Thurs, 73, R973 E. Townline Road, Athens died Sunday, July 15,
2001 under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Community Health
Care Wausau Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at Trinity
Lutheran Church, Athens. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Town of
Hamburg. Rev. Donn Radde and Rev. Gary Uttech will officiate.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer
Funeral Home, Athens and again on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of
services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church,
Athens, the American Cancer Society or Comfort Care and Hospice Services at
Community Health Care Wausau Hospital.
He was born April 30, 1928 in the Town of Hamburg, son of the late Frank and
Emma (Luedtke) Thurs. On October 19, 1963, he married Luann Hoge at Trinity
Lutheran Church, Athens. She survives.
Gordie was a Veteran of the US Army.
He had been employed at Marathon Electric until the time of his retirement in
1993. During this time Gordie started and operated the ''G.T. Hobby & Tool''.
He was the sexton and organizer of Trinity Salem Cemetery Association, had
previously served as the local representative for the Lutheran Church Extension
Fund and was a community advisor for the Athens High School ''High Mileage Car''
project.
Gordie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens where served on various
boards. He was also a member of the American Legion Chapman-Belter Post #4,
Athens.
He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, playing cards, baseball,
bowling, golfing and working in his hobby shop, until his physical condition no
longer allowed him to.
Survivors besides his wife, Luann, include 1 daughter, DeeAnn (Jeff) Zenner,
Athens; 3 grandchildren, Breann, Samantha and Anastasia Zenner; 1 sister, Elaine
Thurs, Montello; 2 brothers, Lester Thurs, Brooklyn Center, MN and Elroy Thurs,
Cedarburg.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Nora Macik and Hilda
Riemer; 3 brothers, Walter, Raymond and Harold Thurs.
A special thank you to Dr. Melms and the staff at the Comfort Care and Hospice
Unit, especially Jan Guden for all their support, kindness and love shown to
Gordie and his family during his last days.
