Spec. 5 Jerry Paulson, who lived here with Father Richard Hewetson while
attending the last two years of high school, has been decorated with the Bronze
Star medal for heroism in Vietnam. The incident occurred last fall when his unit
came under attack by a company of North Vietnamese. The citation read:
"Specialist Paulson immediately rushed to his battle position and quickly began
loading his tank's weapons. His energetic efforts contributed greatly to the
repulsion of attackers in his sector. When his tank moved to assist a disabled
tank in another sector, he continued his aggressive resistance to the enemy. On
finding that the vehicle's machine guns were ineffective against the enemy
because of their close proximity, he left the relatives safety of his tank to
bring accurate fire against them with his submachine gun. His actions prevented
the enemy from throwing explosive charges against the tank and accounted for a
large number of enemy casualties. Throughout the battle he offered constant
encouragement to his comrades and reassured the wounded. His actions were
significant in the successful repulsion of the enemy assault."
He has completed his year of duty in Vietnam and currently is reassigned to duty
in Alaska, after having enjoyed a furlough with relatives at International
Falls, Minnesota.
