Gerald R. Pecher, senior journalism major from Abbotsford, has been named as the
1969 recipient of the Arthur L. Murray Memorial Journalism Award at Wisconsin
State University, Eau Claire.
Pecher is the third Eau Claire student to receive the award, which was
established in 1967 by Mrs. A.L. Murray in memory of her late husband, Professor
Arthur L. Murray, a faculty member from 1918 to 1943.
The award, meant to recognize meritorious service to campus student
publications, cities Pecher for his outstanding work as editor of the Periscope
for the past two years and his contributions as past president of the local
chapter of Pi Delta Epsilon, nation Journalism fraternity.
Pecher has worked on the student yearbook for four years. He represented his
school at the associated collegiate yearbook workshop at the University of
Minnesota in 1968, and was a delegate to the national yearbook conferences in
1968 and 1969, and to the national Pi Delta Epsilon convention this past month.
He has been active in the student publications movement in the state university
system for the past three years.
Professor Robert Smith, Periscope advisor, expressed his delight with the
selection of Pecher by saying: "This is a suitable reward for two years of
unusually competent service as a yearbook editor. He has done well."
