Long, Bonnie Jean (25 July 1061 – 20 April 2024)
Bonnie Jean Long, passed away on April 20, 2024, at her home in Spencer, at the
age of 62, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on July 25, 1961, in Marshfield, to George “Diddy” and Jean Mess.
Bonnie grew up making memories with her two brothers as the middle child, and
she never missed an opportunity to crack a joke about them, laugh with them, or
at them. She attended Marshfield High School, and graduated in 1979. After
graduating, Bonnie worked at Diamond Dave’s briefly, before discovering her
passion for caring for people. She dedicated 41 years of her career to
Marshfield Living Center, where she served as a CNA, Dementia Unit Coordinator,
and finally as an Activity Director. Even after leaving the skilled nursing home
setting, Bonnie continued helping others as the Adult Daycare Director for
Companion Day Services. She loved her clients and her staff as if they were her
own family.
On August 19th, 1989, she married John Dick Jr. Shortly after their marriage,
they became parents to their daughter, Ashley, on May 1, 1990. Years later they
divorced. Bonnie remarried on September 9, 1998, to Patrick Long. In December of
2020, Bonnie’s most cherished title was given as “Grandma,” after the birth of
her grandson, Ira, and again in August 2022 to her granddaughter, Renna.
Bonnie was a shining light and a ray of sunshine to all who knew her. She was
kind, generous, and a natural caregiver, who always prioritized the needs of
others before her own. Her beautiful and kind soul touched the lives of many,
and there wasn't anything she wouldn't do for her loved ones. Her smile was
contagious, and her laugh was one of a kind – you couldn’t help but smile and
laugh along with her while in her presence. In her free time, Bonnie enjoyed
being with her family, especially her grandchildren playing with toy trains and
cars, traveling to new places, spending time at her friend Teresa’s cabin on the
lake, visiting wineries, savoring margaritas, and planting flowers. She also had
a love for shopping and spending time with her girlfriends over a good Bloody
Mary.
Bonnie was a devoted wife to Patrick Long, a loving mother to Ashley (Conrad)
Bragee, a doting grandmother to Ira and Renna, a caring aunt, niece, cousin and
friend. She is also survived by her mother, Jean Mess; brothers Randy (Rodi)
Mess and Glenn (Bobby Nollenberg) Mess; along with many nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her father, George “Diddy” Mess; maternal
grandparents, Al & Lillian Johnsrud; paternal grandparents, George Sr. & Gladyce
Mess; uncle, Teddy Woodkey; nephew, Derek Mess; niece and godchild, Rodi
Erickson.
A memorial service and celebration of Bonnie's life will be held at
Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home in Marshfield, WI, on May 4th, 2024. Visitation
will take place from 9:00 a.m., up until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m.,
with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions to support
her grandchildren's future education endeavors would be preferred. Bonnie's
legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness will forever be cherished by all who
were fortunate to have known her.
Those who knew Bonnie well, knew she was always wearing bright colors (rarely
black) or something with a pattern, with her matching shade of lipstick, and her
hair “just perfect.” Please honor her memory by wearing anything but black; and
(if you wear it), your favorite shade of lipstick!

enjoyed sewing and often sewed clothes for the family. In her later years, she
got into bird watching and feeding the birds. Donna’s greatest joy was spending
time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. “Her kids”, as she called
them, were her pride and joy.
After retiring from the farm, Donna worked several years at Cray

Neillsville-National Library Week (Celebrates - 2024)
National Library Week Celebrates Libraries and Staff
Karen Venne, library staff member, helps patrons check out books at the
Neillsville Public Library.
By June Thompson
The Neillsville Public Library recognized and celebrated National Library Week
April 7–13. The theme was “Ready, Set, Library!” The week was meant to
acknowledge libraries, librarians and staff members who help patrons.
National Library Workers Day was Tuesday, April 9.
Neillsville Public Library director Janay Ziebell has been director for four
years.
“I love my job,” Ziebell said. “My favorite part is being a part of the
community; providing a service to the residents; providing cultural and
enriching programs/services to our community; providing opportunities to hear
from local authors and experts; promoting the library and all it has to offer;
and, of course, promoting literacy and reading opportunities for all.”
Ziebell continually organizes events and encourages the public to attend them.
“We need to shout to the entire surrounding area the rich opportunities inside
all public libraries,” Ziebell said. “We are so much more than books. Books are
great. Come to the library.”
The Neillsville Public Library has six staff members meeting the needs of the
patrons.
Kathy Wegner, children’s librarian, has worked at the Neillsville Public Library
for more than 30 years, and has worked with the current staff for many years.
“We all like working with each other,” Wegner said. “I get to meet a lot of
different people and help them, especially children. I enjoy story hour.”
The next story hour is Friday, April 19.
“In the summer [June/July], story hour is every other Thursday,” said Wegner.
Wegner organizes the Children’s Summer Reading Program.
“This summer, the program is ‘Adventures Begin at Your Library,’” Wegner said.
Wegner enjoys reading Danielle Steel’s novels and listening to audio books. One
of her recent audio books is “I Survived the Children’s Blizzard.”
“It’s about the 1888 Dakota snowstorms,” said Wegner. “It has a lot of history
in it.”
Assistant librarian Leanne Mayer has been working at the library since 2009.
“I’ve always loved the library,” Wegner said. “The library’s always been a place
to come. The staff—they’re all fun to work with. We can have a good laugh.”
Karen Venne has been working at the library over decade. “
I enjoy working with the people, and finding books and articles,” Venne said,
“and watching the kids grow up.
“I love library work. I love this job. I wish I would’ve shown up sooner.”
Venne has read young adult science fiction/fantasy novels. She is currently
reading mysteries by Wisconsin authors Jeff Nania and Joy Ann Ribar.
Staff member Barb Freedlund works a day a week at the library.
“I enjoy reading, and the people I work with,” Freedlund said. “It gets me out
of the house for a bit.”
Barb is a retired farm wife.
“I started working at the library in 2016,” Freedlund said. “I needed a little
something to do after we sold the cows.”
Along with library staff members, Patrick Glinski is the library custodian,
maintaining the building and sidewalk.
During National Library Week, Ziebell invited patrons to read the Storybook
Trail at Schuster Park beginning at the south end by the steam engine and
progressing along the entire walking trail to the north end. After reading the
story, Ziebell encouraged readers to stop at the library to sign up for a prize
drawing for a free kid’s bike donated by Atmus Filtration Technologies.
Patrons stopped by the library, had their picture taken with the trophy (to go
with the theme) and entered their name in the drawing for a new Polaroid Camera.
One of the newer resources offered by the Neillsville Public Library is wireless
printing. Patrons can bring their own device (laptop, cell phone) with a
document downloaded and the staff can help the patron print from that device.
Any prints done in this manner during National Library Week were entered into a
drawing for a $20 Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificate.
The Neillsville Public Library is open Monday, 10 a.m.¬–8 p.m., Tuesday, 10
a.m.¬¬–¬5 p.m., Wednesday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Thursday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Friday, 10
a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.

Next Never Forgotten Honor Flight (Set to take off - 2024)
The Never Forgotten Honor Flight (NFHF) organization based in Wausau will fly 95
Vietnam and 11 Korea-era veterans from central and northern Wisconsin to
Washington, D.C. to see the memorials that honor their service Monday, April 22.
It is the organization’s 47th flight since the first Never Forgotten Honor
Flight took place April 27, 2010.
Sixty-seven guardians will accompany the vets after they have completed a
mandatory training session April 21. The guardians will then accompany their
assigned veterans on a one-day round-trip to Washington D.C., departing Central
Wisconsin Airport at 6:30 a.m., scheduled to return at approximately 10 p.m.
The public is invited to the Central Wisconsin Airport to welcome the veterans
home. Honor Flight officials recommend arriving no later than 8:30 p.m. Free
parking for those welcoming these veterans home will be provided. NFHF veteran
alumni are encouraged to wear their NFHF-issued clothing (hat, shirt or
windbreaker) for the welcome home ceremony.
Veterans from Clark County who will be on the trip include Vietnam-era Army
veterans Gerald and Linda Baumann of Dorchester, Marjean Zoellick of Dorchester,
James Dux of Loyal, Jerry Noeldner of Loyal, and James Seefeldt and Korea War
veterans Don Kirkconnell of Greenwood (Air Force) and James Wilde of Thorp
(Army).
After the April 22 trip, the NFHF will have flown 4,505 veterans to Washington,
D.C. All veterans who served prior to May 7, 1975, are encouraged to submit an
application to neverforgottenhonorflight.com or by calling 715-573-8519.
Applications can be completed online or mailed to Never Forgotten Honor Flight,
225780 Rib Mountain Drive, #234, Wausau, WI 54401.
The only criteria for veterans to qualify for an Honor Flight is to have served
(active duty, reserves or national guard) prior to May 7, 1975, regardless of
where they served.
The veterans are selected based upon the order in which their applications are
received and the conflict they served in. Preference is given to World War
II-era veterans, then Korea-era veterans and then Vietnam-era veterans. Veterans
who are terminally ill, regardless of when they served in those three eras, are
given top preference.
Veterans receive a free round-trip flight, and guardians pay $500 for the
opportunity to accompany one, two or three veterans on the trip. Guardians
interested in taking a future Honor Flight must also complete an application.
Guardians should be 18–69 years old and able to lend physical assistance to the
veterans (cannot be a spouse or “significant other”).
North Central Wisconsin’s NFHF is the nation’s 77th regional hub of 129 in the
USA and one of five Wisconsin Honor Flight hubs. The Wausau-based organization
was certified by the National Honor Flight Network office in Springfield, Ohio
on December 11, 2009.
