Sromek, Stanley “Stan” (6 APR 1920 - 20 DEC 2016)
Stanley “Stan” Sromek, age 96, of Gilman, passed away December 20, 2016 at
Oakbrook Health and Rehabilitation in Thorp, WI, where he resided since
December, 2008.
Stan was born on April 6, 1920 to Peter and Josephine (Myslinski) Sromek in
Lublin, WI. He was the 5th of six children born. He grew up on the family farm
helping his parents and siblings with the farm that his father had purchased in
1912. He attended schools, in Polley and Gilman, WI.
Stan met Rose Marie (Polak) at a dance at Kit Kat in Thorp, where he was playing
drums with the Rhythm Rascals Band. Just as they started dating the war broke
out and in 1941. He followed brothers Milton and Edward to serve his country,
joining the United States Army Air Force. Stan was a flight recorder in Burma
and India for fighter jets and bombers supporting the war effort in Southeast
Asia.
Upon returning from service in 1946, Stan and Rose married on June 22, of that
same year. They took over the Sromek family farm and operated it for 40 years
until Jerry, their son, took over the
business.
Stan was a strong family man, devoted to his wife of 70 years and his children.
He taught his children the meaning of hard, honest work and hard, honest fun!
Stan, along with his brothers organized The Rhythm Rascals, later to be renamed
the Peaceful Valley Swingsters Band,
where they enjoyed many hours of playing together for dance clubs, radio
stations, and weddings.
Later in life he enjoyed picking up the drumsticks at Jungles Tavern
(conveniently located directly across from the family farm) with local accordion
players to everyone’s dancing delight. (One more E-I-E-I-O!) As a drummer, he
had a keen ear for the perfect beat. He loved and appreciated a “good” Polish
polka beat!
Stan also loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing and trapping, with trapping being
what he was known best for. “Trapper Stan” taught many young and not so young
how to set a good
conibear. Stan continued to tramp the woods and fish the waters, well into his
80’s, passing his love and respect for the outdoors to all of his children and
grandchildren.
Through the years, Stan had the opportunity to celebrate many, many happy and
momentous occasions. Two of the most memorable were the 100 Year Anniversary of
the Sromek Family Farm in 2012 and this past June’s celebration of his and
Rose’s 70th wedding anniversary!
He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Rose of Lublin, his children; Greg
Sromek of Neillsville, Sharon (Pat) Schaefer of Lublin, Jerry (Sandy) Sromek,
and Judy (Dewey) Cornell both of Gilman; six grandchildren: Greg Jr. (Chandra)
Sromek, Lisa Sromek, Angela (Jason) Fredrickson, Michael (Heather) Cornell,
Megan Sromek, and Bryce Sromek; seven great-grandchildren: Ethan, Atom, Aurora,
Orion, Gavin, Olivia, and Liam; sisters-in-law; Celia Sromek, Marie Slowiak,
Harriet Milstroh, and brother/sister-in-law, Tony and Helen
Polak.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and daughter: Peter and
Josephine Sromek, brothers and sisters-in-law Frank and Eleanor Sromek, William
and Ann Sromek, Milton Sromek, Edward and Theresa Sromek, sister and
brother-in-law Stephanie and Stanley Reyzer, daughter, Mary in infancy, and
beloved daughter-in-law Jeannie Sromek.
A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Tuesday, December 27th, 2016 at St.
Stanislaus Catholic Church-Lublin with Father Madanu Lourdu officiating.
Interment will take place at a later date in the Parish Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until time of service Tuesday morning at the
Church. Plombon Funeral Service-Gilman assisted the family with arrangements.
In Memory of Dear Husband, Father, Grand-father, Great-grandfather, Uncle, and
Friend, Stan Sromek.
I farmed the land, I tramped the wood. These are the things I understood.
No grand schemes that passed me by. I knew the brook, the hills, the sky.
To hunt a deer, to wet the line. Gifts from God so good and fine. Friend and
kin, I loved them so. Although I’m gone, I’m sure they know.
I’m now at peace, life’s battle done. I’ve faced the foes and I have won.
