Herb Sauer, Citizen of Year in Colby

Herb Sauer has been honored by the Colby Chamber of Commerce as its 1985 “Citizen of the Year.” Sauer was presented with his award at the chamber’s annual meeting last Sunday.

Sauer, who with his wife Marcella, runs S and K Dairy Equipment in Colby, was honored in part for his continued involvement with the state championship tractor pull, the Sunday main event during the annual Colby Cheese Days celebration. He has worked with the tractor pull since 1971.

The Sauers have been members of the Chamber of Commerce since taking over the dairy equipment operation in 1972. Sauer has participated in the annual dairy breakfasts sponsored by the chamber at local farms. He is an active member and Communion minister at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby, and a Deputy Grand Knight in the Colby chapter of the Knights of Columbus.

He also makes visits to residents at the Colonial House and to sick members of the parish. He was active in Little League activities in the past. This spring he and his wife received a community service award from the Catholic Family Life Insurance organization.

He worked for two previous owners of the dairy equipment business.
