Gumz, Mary T. (Swoboda) (7 JUN 1923 - 21 DEC 2016)
After a long struggle with Alzheimer's and one last Rosary with her family, Mary
T. Gumz, age 93, of Colby, formerly of Milan, passed away on Saturday, December
24, 2016 at the Colonial Center in Colby.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 29,
2016 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Milan. Father George Graham will
officiate.
Family and friends are welcome from 11:00 a.m. until time of service Thursday at
the church.
The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford is entrusted with the
arrangements.
Mary was born on June 7, 1923 in the Town of Frankfort, Marathon County, the
daughter of Fred and Theresa (Uhlier) Swoboda. On January 4, 1941, she was
united in marriage to Harold Gumz. They were married for 49 years. He preceded
her in death on March 1, 1990. Together they farmed near Milan all their lives
until retirement and moved to Colby in May of 1984. Even after retirement Mary
always remained active helping out on the farm.
Mary was active in her church singing in the choir. She also sang with the
Milladore Czech group for many years sharing her pride in her Czech heritage.
Mary loved to polka dance and would meet friends every Sunday afternoon to
listen and dance to various polka bands.
Mary loved to make prunes and dumplings for her family as a special treat. She
loved the farm and the cows. Mary loved to play the harmonica and go to rummage
sales. Most importantly, she valued her children and wanted to make sure their
faith was strong.
Mary is survived by her five children: Patricia Monroe (Jerry Hayes) of Fort
Worth, TX, Delmar (JoAnn) Gumz of Schofield, Roger Gumz (Unetta Unger) of
Butler, Suzanne Frane of Madisonville, TX and Michael (Sue) Gumz of Athens; her
daughter-in-law, Grace Gumz of Athens; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; her son, James;
one brother, two sisters, two half-brothers, two sons-in-law, Gilbert Le Du and
Gerald Monroe and a grandson, Daniel Le Du.
