On Veterans Day this year, Monday, November 14, 1968, the Thorp Public Schools
and members of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118 of the American Legion, Thorp (Clark
Co., Wis.), will honor Ronald Sandel, who was Thorp's first Vietnam combat
casualty, a little over a year ago, on October 9th, 1967.
A Bronze Star Medal with a special attached "V" device and the Purple Heart were
presented to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Sandel, following action in which he
was mortally wounded in an attempt to save the life of a wounded soldier.
Ronald Sandel was born August 29, 1946, attended Thorp schools and was a Thorp
High School graduate of the Class of 1964.
This Monday, November 11, starting at 12:35 p.m., there will be a dedication at
the high school of "The Freedom Shrine," in memory of Ronald Sandel.
"The Freedom Shrine," only obtainable through the eau Claire Exchange Club in
this vicinity, and is a series of pictures, the reproduction of important
documents of the United States, such as the Bill of Rights, World Wars Armistice
documents, etc. They will be permanently displayed at the Thorp High School.
