Alger, Jay (16 FEB 1893 – 23 NOV 1968)
Funeral services for Jay Ralph Alger, 75, of the town of Thorp (Clark Co.,
Wis.), were held Tuesday, November 26, 1968, ten a.m. at St. Bernard's Church,
with Rev. Francis Brockman officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Harold Mattes, Art Stewart, Ed Schmidt, Loren Bivens, Vic
Verner, and Frank Swienton.
Mr. Alger was born February 16, 1893 in the town of Thorp. His early years were
spent in logging camps and on road construction. He farmed in the town of Thorp
part time most of his married life. He was employed for Blue Moon Foods for 17
years before his retirement. He married Mamie H. Vanderhyden on May 25, 1915 at
St. Bernard's Church.
He is survived by three sons, Cyril, Edmund and Gilbert Alger, all of Thorp;
three daughters, (Genevieve) Mrs. John Schmidt of Lodi, (Mildred) Mrs. Joseph
Schmidt of St. Paul, Minn., and (Annabelle) Mrs. Dale Anderson of Stanley; three
brothers, Earl of Hilbert, Sydney Sr. of Thorp, Donald of Ladysmith; three
sisters, Mrs. Hazel Weinberger and (Eva) Mrs. Layton Asselin, both of Thorp, and
Mrs. Doris Ustruck of Milwaukee; twenty-nine grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
