Knott, Helen (27 JUL 1968 – 03 JAN 1969)
Four-month-old Helen Knott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Knott, burned to
death Friday night when fire swept through their farm home about 4 1/2 miles
west of Spencer on Highway 98 in the Clark County Town of Sherman.
A brother and sister of the victim, Chris, age 7, and Velvet, age 3, were
rescued by their mother, but the parents were unable to save the infant daughter
sleeping in a crib in a downstairs bedroom.
The parents were finishing chores in the barn, and as Mrs. Knott returned to the
home, she smelled smoke. The interior of the house was entirely in flames when
she pulled two of the children to safety. At one time in his several attempts,
the father was within feet of the burning crib and saw it collapse in flames.
