Mary “Joan” Kufahl, age 83, of Wausau, and formerly of Tomahawk, passed away on
Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, under hospice care.
She was born June 28, 1933, in Athens, to the late Edward and Ruth (Jacobitz)
Giese. Joan was married to Harvey Kufahl on Nov. 25, 1954. He passed away in
2013.
Joan was a 1951 graduate of Athens High School. Following graduation, she worked
at Employers Mutual in Wausau for several years before transferring to the
Milwaukee area. After raising her daughters, she began employment at Kohl’s
Distribution Center and was employed with Kohl’s for over 30 years. Harvey and
Joan moved to Tomahawk in 1998 where they enjoyed living on Lake Alice for 15
years. She loved camping in her earlier years, gardening, casino trips and
traveling with her sisters and niece. Joan was a wonderful cook and was involved
in the Red Hat Society. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of
Tomahawk. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her
grandchildren. She will be greatly missed and remembered by all.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Mike) Petcoff of Wauwatosa and Carolyn
(Glenn) Belanger of Athens; two brothers, Thomas (Helen) Giese of Marshfield and
Edward (Marge) Giese of Sussex; two sisters, Jackie Bergman of Tomahawk and
Nancy Streich, of Merrill; and two grandchildren, Daniel Belanger and Katie
(Chris) Culvey. She is further survived by two great-grandchildren, Alana and
Teagan Culvey, and an additional grandchild expected in March.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Ruth; her husband, Harvey;
two brothers, Jim and Bobby; and three sisters, June, Shirley and Rosemary.
