Dettmering, Marlene Joan (Brost) (15 JUL 1934 - 24 JAN 2017)

Marlene Joan Dettmering, 82, of Medford, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Our House Assisted Living, Medford, where she had resided for the past four years, most recently under the care of Hope Hospice, surrounded by her family.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford, with Father Phil Juza, Father Frederick Brost and Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating.

Visitation will take place at Hemer Funeral Home, Medford, from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, where there will be a 7 p.m. rosary service held that evening, also, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Interment of her cremated remains will take place at Molitor Catholic Cemetery, Township of Molitor at a later date. The urnbearer will be Jesse Laher and the honorary urnbearers will be all the other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marlene was born on July 15, 1934 in Medford to the late Margaret Catherine Enders and Anton J. Brost. She attended Holy Rosary Catholic School, Medford, and was a 1952 graduate of Medford High School. On April 11, 1959, in Medford, she married the former Medford Mayor, Robert Dettmering and he preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1987.

Prior to her marriage, she worked at a Milwaukee Catholic Orphanage for a period of time. She returned to Medford and worked at Bob’s Drive Inn. She was a drum major in the former Medford City Band. She was the manager of the Journal and Sentinel paper route for a period of time. They owned and operated Hull’s Lake Resort in the Town of Molitor from 1973-1994. Marlene worked at Stonecroft Manor following her husband’s death from 1991-2001. She enjoyed baking, socializing with her friends at Hull’s Lake, dancing, sewing and spending time with her family. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford where she was active with several church activities including Our Ladies of Holy Rosary, National Guard Auxiliary, Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, curling/bowling Leagues and Medford PTA.

Marlene is survived by her children, Lorin (Colleen) Dettmering, Laura (Gene) Holmes, Jan (Gary) Laher, Carol (Mike) Couillard, Joan Dettmering all of Medford and Karla (Scott) Dettmering-Sveum of De Forest; thirteen grandchildren, Haley (Cody), Holly and Kyle Dettmering, Brett and Clayton (Katie) Holmes, Jesse (Megan), Derek (Dana) and Trevor (Heather) Laher, Hannah and Noah Machon, Jewelia, Kayla and Grant Couillard; four great-grandchildren, Dylan Laher, Olivia Rodriguez, Elise Couillard and Baby Zimmer; siblings, LeRoy, Vernon and Allen (Joanne) Brost all of Medford and Arlyle Mayer of Green Bay; brother-in-law, Karl (Barb) Dettmering of Pewaukee; sisters-in-law, Esther (Gordon) Heier of Winter Haven, Fla., Barb Dettmering of Onalaska, and Joan Dettmering of Port Byron, Ill.

In addition to her parents and husband, Marlene is preceded in death by her siblings, Rita Werner, Margaret “Peg” Tuma and Tom and Lambert “Red” Brost.

The family requests memorial contributions to be given in her name to either Holy Rosary School or Hope Hospice both of Medford or the Alzheimer’s Association.
